Who Are We?
Known internationally as one of America's premiere high school theatre programs, Floyd Central High School's Theatre Arts program offers students comprehensive opportunities both inside the classroom and out. With a full season of shows every year, Floyd Central students experience theatre in a "hands-on" learning environment that is modeled after the professional entertainment industry. Through rigorous and project-based coursework as well as some of the finest performance opportunities a high school can offer, students develop skills that prepare them not only for careers in the arts but also for any field that requires collaboration, self-discipline, leadership and creativity. With coursework and production opportunities in both performance and technical theatre, Floyd Central Theatre Arts is a great fit for students who want to specialize in certain skills or simply dabble in a variety of theatrical experiences.

An International Reputation
Floyd Central Theatre Arts has garnered many accolades and honors throughout its nearly five decades of existence. In addition to being recognized by the Educational Theatre Association as one of the top theatre programs in the country on several occasions, Floyd Central has frequently presented main stage shows at the association's International Thespian Festival. Festival productions include Disney's NEWSIES, 42ND STREET, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, TITANIC, SEUSSICAL, CHILDREN OF EDEN, and many more. Floyd Central productions have also graced the European stage, having represented the state of Indiana at the International Fringe Festival on several occasions. Our 2007 production of Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST received accolades from USA Weekend, as the runner up in their "High School Musical Showstopper" contest. In 2013, Floyd Central was named "Best Theatre School in the Midwest" by Stage Directions Magazine for a commitment to excellence in technical theatre. In recent years, we have been asked by Disney Theatrical Group, Music Theatre International, and others to pilot some of the first high school productions of hit shows before the rights are released for others to perform.

Curriculum
Acting
Students following the performance track take classes that cover a wide variety of acting styles and dramatic literature. Coursework is primarily performance-based and students spend a great deal of time during class on their feet, developing the practical tools of the actor. Our Advanced Acting and Musical Theatre courses sometimes produce full-length shows, affording students the opportunity to study plays from both academic and practical perspectives. Theatre students can also participate in Choir classes through Floyd Central's acclaimed Choral Department, under the direction of Angela Hampton. Because of our commitment to providing students with a diverse range of performance experiences, we often bring in guest artists from the professional theatre industry who work with our students as instructors, directors, choreographers, or performers. |
Technical Theatre
Technical Theatre students at Floyd Central hone their crafts by preparing for and working on all of our season shows throughout the year as well as other events hosted in our two state-of-the-art venues. Our tech students are always in preparation for our next production, putting in many hours outside of class time. Our original sets are built completely by our students and our techs also work as lighting designers, sound designers, props masters, stage hands, and stage managers on our shows. Students have the opportunity to specialize in lighting, sound, props, carpentry, scenic painting, or management or to get a taste of all areas of technical theatre. We often bring in professional technicians who mentor and sometimes work along side our students as guest designers. Classes are primarily production-oriented so that students can not only learn their craft but also put it into practice. |
International Thespian Society
Troupe #1794
We are proud to be part of the International Thespian Society. Since the 1980's, Floyd Central Theatre students have been connected to the wider world of Theatre Education and the Theatre industry through the Society. Under the umbrella of the Educational Theatre Association, the International Thespian Society honors student achievement in Theatre Arts and supports the education and experiences of countless students around the world. We regularly attend the International Thespian Festival every year in June and our teachers participate in professional development through the Educational Theatre Association. |
