New Season Opens With An Oom-Pah-Pah!
You can “Consider Yourself” invited to the opening of Floyd Central Theatre Arts new season with Lionel Bart’s classic musical, Oliver!, being produced in an exciting new concert style with a live on-stage orchestra and featuring a cast of elementary schoolers from across the southern Indiana area and students from Highland Hills Middle School. The whole town is coming together for an up close night of roaring laughter, touching drama, and lots of fun for the whole family. “It’s really exciting that the audience is going to see the future of Floyd Central and Highland Hills Theatre”, says director Robbie Steiner. “There are a lot of great kids in the cast bringing a lot of new talent and youthful energy. It’s going to be a really exciting production.
Oliver! is based on Charles Dickens nineteenth century tale of the troubles and adventures of Oliver Twist. Growing up as an orphan in a London workhouse, Oliver Twist (Lincoln Fogarty) makes the mistake to ask the pompous beadle Mr. Bumble (Senior Taylor Lockhart) for more food. Outraged Bumble and Widow Corney (Senior Emily North) sell Oliver to be the apprentice of two undertakers, Mr and Mrs. Sowerberry (Senior Camden Hardesty and Junior Gretchen Edwards). After a confrontation with the other apprentices, Oliver flees and runs into the Artful Dodger (Zander Essex) and inadvertently joins a gang of young pickpockets led by the ederly criminal Fagin (Senior Jack Meriwether). There, he meets the kind-hearted Nancy (Senior Isabella Arnett) and her evil partner Bill Sikes (Junior Hunter Marlow). Oliver accidentally makes an enemy of Sikes and quickly learns just how many dangers loom overhead of vulnerable children lost on the streets of London.
Uniquely produced with the full orchestra on stage alongside of the actors, Floyd Central’s production will focus on the humanity at the core of the story, incorporating projections to drive the storytelling rather than elaborate staging. The entire cast will remain onstage for most of the show, intentionally employing little movement in order to keep the focus on the soaring music and iconic character-driven narrative. Featuring brand new orchestrations from the recent London production of the show, this musical in concert is sure to entertain and inspire!
Bringing the world of London to life takes a lot of work from both the actors and technicians who are responsible for all that happens behind the scenes of a show. These students design lights for the show, deal with anything related to sound, and some are even responsible for calling the cues that keep the show moving. Junior Bradley Noder is this production’s stage manager and he had this to say about his experience with Oliver!: “It’s been a lot of fun and a little more laid back than typical shows are. We get to work with a lot of children and they definitely bring a liveliness to the environment that isn’t always there.” Bradley will be running the production from behind the scenes when the show opens October 25.
